This is a representation of cutting off one's cultural roots. The subject of the artwork is a Chinese red tassel, symbolizing prosperity, good fortune, and longevity. The hands cling and tug at the tassel, loosening its knot. Scissors sever not only good fortune but also personal connections to one's heritage. The imagery is an exploration of the turbulent emotions that come with the insecurity and shame of one's culture. The hands direct the eye to the tassel, giving the piece movement.
